A reason to play
I remember long, hot summer days with my friends. We ran, climbed, cycled, explored and invented games as we went.
We moved because we had a burning desire to play.
Those are my memories. They are my experience, and I know everyone’s childhood looked different.
In my work, I’ve seen adults rediscover active play. One participant described it as “unadulterated active play”. Those words stayed with me.
Play shouldn’t have an age limit
As we get older, movement can become something we plan, schedule and measure. Play can slip into the background, even when we still enjoy moving with curiosity, trying something new or sharing a game with someone else.
Active play can take many forms. You might dance to a favourite song, practise balancing, explore a new route, throw and catch, or make up a game. It can be gentle or energetic, solitary or social. The point is to find movement that feels playful to you.
““Play shouldn’t have an age limit.””
Movement that feels like play
Active play is one way to move your body. It can be as gentle or energetic as you like. When movement feels playful, you may find yourself doing more and thinking less about the effort.
Play can take many forms
Run, dance, climb, balance, explore or make up a game. You could even try Primal Play Tag. Play can be spontaneous or planned, indoors or outside, on your own or with others. There’s no single right way to do it.
What I’ve seen
Through my work, I’ve seen adults rediscover the sheer joy of active play. They start moving, get caught up in the moment and remember how good it can feel to play.
Our invitation
We believe play should have a place at every age. Find an excuse to move, explore, laugh or try something new. If you’re moving and it feels like play, it counts.
Why World Active Play Day exists
Play can look different at every age. Yet as life becomes busier, active play can be easier to leave behind. Adults may organise play for children without joining in themselves. Children’s opportunities for independent, outdoor and unstructured play can also be shaped by safety, access to places to play, busy schedules and the pull of passive entertainment and digital devices.
World Active Play Day is a chance to make room for physically active play across the lifespan. It invites us to play out as well as work out, and to remember that movement can feel enjoyable, social, imaginative or simply fun.
Founded by Darryl Edwards, creator of the Primal Play Method®, the day grew from his work helping adults rediscover active play. It was announced at the US Play Coalition Conference on the Value of Play in 2026.
One day. Every age. Everyone invited to active play.
What counts as active play?
If you’re moving and it feels like play, it counts. Here are a few ways to begin.
Run and chase
Running, tag and playful chasing games.
Throw and catch
Throwing, catching and keeping a ball in play.
Climb and balance
Climbing, balancing and finding different ways to move.
Dance and explore
Dancing to a favourite song or exploring somewhere new.
Try a movement challenge
Invent a playful challenge or see how many ways you can cross a space.
Play a game
Bring back a childhood game like hopscotch or make up a new one.
Active play can be structured or spontaneous, indoors or outdoors, alone or with others. You can adapt it to suit you.
Active play can make room for more
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Active play is one way to move your body. What it involves and how demanding it feels will vary from person to person.
PLAY-SPECIFIC EVIDENCE
Research on play explores possible benefits for wellbeing, development and social connection. Findings depend on the type of play, the people involved and the outcomes measured.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
In my work, I’ve seen adults rediscover the freedom and enjoyment of active play. One participant described it as “unadulterated active play”.
OUR CAMPAIGN BELIEF
We believe everyone should have opportunities to play actively throughout life, in ways that feel welcoming and meaningful to them.
