Primal Play Glossary: Key Terms and Definitions
This glossary explains key terms used across PrimalPlay.com. It distinguishes the Primal Play Method® from the activities, principles and services connected with it.
Core Primal Play terms
- Primal Play Method®
- An evidence-informed approach to physical activity created by Darryl Edwards. It uses active play, movement variety and exercise science to shape movement that is adaptable, engaging and repeatable across the lifespan.
- Active play
- Physical activity experienced through play. It may involve games, exploration, movement challenges, dancing, chasing, climbing, balancing or carrying, shaped by factors such as choice, curiosity, enjoyment and social interaction.
- Primal movement
- In the Primal Play Method®, fundamental human movement performed in varied, practical and adaptable ways. It does not mean recreating an imagined ancestral lifestyle.
- Animal Moves
- Whole-body movement patterns inspired by animal locomotion and postures. They can challenge strength, mobility, balance, coordination and locomotion. Animal Moves are one tool within the Primal Play Method®, not the Method itself.
- The four scientific pillars
- The four research domains that inform the Primal Play Method®: evolutionary biology, exercise physiology, cognitive neuroscience and play psychology.
- The four movement principles
- Primal, Powerful, Perceptual and Playful: four principles used to shape movement variety, physical challenge, perceptual skill and the experience of play.
- Primal Play in Practice
- The practical movement library on PrimalPlay.com, with activities and movement ideas that can be adapted to different people, settings and goals.
- Movement Oncology™
