WHY WORKING OUT ISN'T WORKING OUT

Since 2010, I have been a speaker and workshop facilitator at conferences worldwide from London to Berlin, from Austin to Sydney. I also had the honour and privilege of delivering a TED talk at TEDx Royal Tunbridge Wells in January 2019.

I love speaking to audiences of all sizes. I speak on a broad range of topics around health and wellbeing, focussing on the issues we encounter in the modern era based on lack of physical activity, unrelenting stress, social isolation, poor dietary choices and inadequate sleep. My core expertise is promoting physical activity that is not only fun and engaging, but most importantly healthful and accessible for all.

Movement is medicine!

If your organisation or association wants to know how to improve the health and wellbeing of their members, I can craft a workshop, seminar or presentation to deliver the action required not just for a quick-fix but providing a toolset to kick-start a new attitude towards life.

Recent Examples of Speaking Topics:

EXAMPLES OF TOPICS ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

  • The Relationship Between Physical Activity and Good Health
If exercise came in pill form, we would only be too eager to take our keep-fit medicine. Even small doses extend longevity and prevent disease. Recent studies tell us that exercise reduces all-cause mortality risk, reduces cardiovascular related events, as well as warding off chronic lifestyle conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cancer. It will be proposed that the lack of activity is more detrimental to long-term health than more recognisable risk factors.

  • Movement as Medicine
What are the underlying mechanisms that support the benefits of physical activity for the prevention and therapy of chronic lifestyle disease such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer.

  • Movement Oncology - Physical Activity for Cancer Prevention and Therapy
The evidence supporting physical activity for cancer prevention as well as therapeutic intervention

  • The benefits of HIIT and strength training to manage hyperinsulinemia

Why is exercise one of the best ways to deal with hyperinsulinemia and metabolic syndrome and what types of exercise work best as a prescription?

  • 7 Steps to Paleo Fitness

Discussing why and how adopting a Paleolithic model of fitness within our own lives is beneficial in the 21st Century.

    EXAMPLES OF TOPICS ON PLAY

  • No Play, No Gain
Despite appearing frivolous, play is essential for healthy human development. Not just for kids, but for adults too. I will review the justifications for play in the context of our ancestry and discuss the importance of incorporating a play regimen to support optimal health, movement and life.

  • Active Play: what role did it have in our evolutionary past and how vital is it for our future?
There exists a body of evidence that active play was an essential part of our survival as a species. It bonded us together and helped us to be better at social tasks like hunting, rearing young and building shelters. It will be proposed that although most of us are aware that play is important for children, we are less familiar with the underlying evolutionary mechanisms that make it useful for mind and body in the present.

    EXAMPLES OF MOTIVATIONAL TOPICS

  • The Curious Case of Darryl Edwards
The life-changing events that the began Darryl's transition from computer scientist working for almost 20 years within investment banking to health and movement coach.

  • The Truth About Resilience (Mental Health Topic)
How can we improve our ability to deal with stress, adversity and change?
Without the appropriate perspective and tools in place it is difficult to cultivate resilience, especially when we need it most.

This talk discusses how we can effectively build resilience in the face of life’s challenges with an action plan that we can all implement.

  • Will-power rarely works!
What can we do to bring about lifestyle change that is sustainable and beneficial.

EXAMPLES OF LIFESTYLE AND WELL-BEING TOPICS

  • Healthspan vs Lifespan: Nature vs Pharma

Benjamin Franklin wrote that “in this world nothing can be certain except deaths and taxes.” One could demonstrate quite easily that if you are wealthy enough, you can certainly avoid paying taxes! However if one is healthy will this lead to increased longevity or are the use of pharmaceuticals a better option for the 21st Century?

  • Sleep Therapy
How to improve health, increase daytime productivity and optimise wellbeing by focussing on sleep quality.

  • The 12 Pillars of Health
Health is multi-factorial. It isn't just based on one thing, and it doesn't require perfection. What does help is an understanding of the small positive changes that can make a difference, most of which are under our control.

  • The Secrets to Longevity
Is there an elixir of life? If there is what does it consist of?

  • Dealing with Stress Within The Workplace
The impact of stress within the workplace and how we can deal with it to avoid burnout, loss of productivity and long-term illness.

  • The Evolution of Cancer
Is cancer a modern disease? Dispelling some of the myths and falsehoods of this disease.

"Darryl’s story is motivating. He is an exceptional role model for how a holistic approach to health and wellbeing can literally change lives. Darryl's sessions are refreshingly interactive and his style is infectious.”
Dr. Paul Lowe – Course Director, LCC, University of the Arts London

"I had the privilege today of watching Darryl Edwards at the USA Play Coalition give a magnificent summary of what play is and how we can better use it for our own enrichment, increased brain size and many other factors. It was an organised, clear presentation cognitively, but, more than that he got the audience moving so that the audience itself, with a variety of clever moves, became enriched, and suddenly established their own state of play. Watching Darryl perform one understands the difficulty in defining play. And yet he not only defined it he exhibited it himself and the audience experienced it, what a rare combination of talent that was!”
Stuart Brown, MD. Author of the Book, “𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘺: 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘵 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯, 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭.” ⁣
